With support of Goldsmiths students college lecturers were striking for 1 day on Tuesday. The students formed a picket line outside Goldsmiths College to support the lecturers' demand for more money and better working conditions. The strike (motto: "overworked - undervalued - underpaid") was organised by the academic unions NATFHE and AUT. According to the unions, the salaries of academic staff have shown "practically no increase in real terms in over two decades." Whereas one lecturer 30 years ago would have taught 9 students, today this number would have increased to 21. A student representative said, the strike would be supported, because the government had failed to fulfill their promise for a payrise for lecturers with the implementation of top up tuition fees. |
